The application of castor wheels

These castors are used in a wide range of industries and are a solution to a lot of storage issues many of us have. In addition to our normal castors, we also manufacture a wide range of specialty castor wheels such as swivel castors that turn around their axis. This makes it easier to maneuver around corners.

Frequently asked questions about castors

What is the difference between a swivel castor and a fixed castor?

A swivel castor rotates in any direction, even under heavy load, for full manoeuvrability; a fixed (rigid) castor cannot be steered and only moves back and forth. Rigid and fixed mean exactly the same product, and applications often combine both.

Which wheel material should I choose?

It depends on load, floor and environment: polyurethane easily carries up to 1,000 kg and suits smooth floors; Vulkollan handles high loads with low rolling resistance; cast iron and steel suit the heaviest loads and high wear; and plastics like nylon, polyamide and thermoplastic add chemical and heat resistance with non-marking treads.

Which bearing type is best?

For heavy loads, roller or ball bearings run more easily than plain bearings. Ball bearings roll very smoothly over long distances but carry less, while roller bearings take higher loads. Match the bearing to your load and travel distance.

When do I need castors with a brake?

Choose locking castors when moving on a slope or to stop the load from moving unexpectedly. The brake usually sits on a swivel castor because it locks both the wheel and the swivel action, typically on containers, platforms, scaffolding and furniture.

How do I calculate the load capacity I need?

When using four castors, divide the total weight by three rather than four, as a safety factor because the load is not spread equally across all wheels. If you are unsure, our engineers are happy to help.
