Different castor break types

Several brake systems are used on our castors. Depending on the dimensions of your wheel or the specifications of your industry, you can choose for the following castor brake types.

  • A brake that presses on the tread of the wheel;
  • A brake that presses on the side of the wheel;
  • A brake that pushes on the floor to prevent the load from moving.

Are you looking for castors with a specific brake type or other requirements? Feel free to contact us for a bespoke solution.

Available brake types on our castors

Castor with top lock brake
A top lock brake is one of the most common types of castor brakes and is also known as a single side castor brake (ss). These brakes are engaged by the side of the wheel. The so-called L-bar will tighten on the tread of the will which will prevent the wheel from moving. The break is operated manually and is therefore dependent on the amount of pressure used on the brake. Too little pressure on these brakes may cause the brake to fail.

Castor with cam brake
Cam brakes are comparable to top lock brakes but this type of brake directly tightens against the tread of the wheel, without using the L-bar component. These brakes are also manually operated. While cam brakes are cheaper and more suitable for larger wheels, the top lock brakes are often more secure. Because these castor break types loosen over time and are not definite locking brakes, there is never a point where your load is definitively locked. There are many other options for locking your loads, applications or equipment into place.

Dual side brake castor
Dual side brake castors are comparable to single side brake castors, but the difference lies in the fact that the wheels have brakes on both sides. Both castor brakes on these wheels need to be operated manually to lock the wheel into place.

Castor with a wrap-around brake
The wrap around castor brake is a castor brake that gives access to the brake from every angle, regardless of the orientation of the castor. This castor brake makes it easy to replace and lock your appliances, equipment or loads. These castors are often used for scaffolding, furniture or toolboxes.

Face contact brake castor
The face contact brakes are activated by tightening the brake shoe against the tread of the wheel.

Poly lock castor brake
Poly lock castor brakes create friction between the tread of the wheel and a metal pad which makes sure the wheel can’t slip or skid. Therefore these castor brake type are often used on heavy duty castors. Especially for pneumatic wheels, there are poly lock castors with a brake shoe that is adapted to pneumatic tyres, which are used for example on aviation wheels.

Castors with toe guard
Toe guards are a safety feature for your castor wheels. The toe guard covers the area around the wheel and prevents objects from preventing the movement of your castor and protects the feet of personnel handling the equipment.
